Student Counsellor

ROLE SUMMARY:

ACG Tauranga is a leading independent co-educational school with excellent facilities and a reputation for outstanding educational outcomes.  We are seeking an experienced, proactive guidance counsellor to work collaboratively as an integral part of our pastoral care team. The key tasks of the role are to provide a high standard of support for students, to promote emotional and mental wellbeing, self-confidence and resilience, and to work collaboratively alongside our staff.

The candidate must be a member of the NZAC but teacher registration is not a requirement for this role. Position is permanent, part-time with hours open to negotiation with the Principal. Due to commence at the beginning of term 1 2026. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop a culture where students feel safe and empowered to seek support.
• Build positive relationships with all students through normal school life, enabling future counselling support as required.
• Actively participate in extra curricular activities.
• Work collaboratively with Heads of School to identify students needing support. Engage with families and seek consent for all students up to and including Year 9.
• Facilitate open relationships and communication with key staff and families within the boundaries of confidentiality.
• Facilitate self-referrals for students Y10 to Y13.
• Support Heads of School with group, cohort or school specific concerns; proactively craft and implement actions.
• Proactively advise Heads of School around patterns of behaviour or emerging trends.
• Actively implement all ACG Tauranga safeguarding policies and procedures.
• Continue to engage with students through the school holiday period as required.
• Facilitate referrals as required in consultations with the relevant Head of School.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

• Recognised counselling qualification and NZAC membership (or eligibility)

• Ability to build strong relationships with students, teachers and wider ACG community.

• High professional standards of confidentiality, integrity, and cultural safety.
