ROLE SUMMARY:

The Head of Science will collaboratively lead the Science Department at the Senior Campus, guiding curriculum, pedagogy, staff development, lab management, and student outcomes. This role involves leading by example—teaching, mentoring, innovating—and contributing to the overall academic vision of Reddam House.


The successful candidate will ensure that the Science program is rigorous, engaging, well‑resourced, and aligned with contemporary best practices. Close collaboration with other Head of Department/Subject including across campuses and year stages is a key aspect of the role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

●    Lead and manage the Science Department in partnership with other staff: oversee curriculum design (Years 10‑12 / Stage 5‑6 / HSC), assessment, and pedagogy.
●    Foster a cohesive and aligned learning experience for students by actively collaborating with the Head of Science - Middle School at the Woollahra campus.
●    Teach across Biology/Chemistry/Physics, maintaining high standards of classroom practice.
●    Mentor, coach, and provide professional development for science teachers.
●    Monitor and evaluate student performance: using data and feedback to drive improvement.
●    Manage departmental budgets, laboratory resources, equipment, safety, and upkeep.
●    Promote scientific literacy, critical thinking, experimental skills, and inquiry‑based learning.
●    Develop and run extracurricular science initiatives, competitions, clubs, or enrichment programs.
●    Collaborate with other department and subject heads and school leadership, integrating cross‑curricular work where possible.
●    Establish communication with students, parents, and guardians about progress, expectations, and learning pathways.
●    Ensure compliance with school policies, relevant legislation, and health & safety, particularly in laboratory settings.
●    Participate in strategic planning for the school, contributing to academic and educational objectives.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE 
●    A tertiary qualification in a science discipline, and a recognised teaching qualification.
●    Highly experienced in teaching Years 10‑12 on one or more science subject across Biology, Chemistry or Physics, with strong results and understanding of the NSW Science curriculum. Biology and Chemistry experience is strongly preferred.
●    Demonstrated leadership experience in educational settings: managing a team, leading change, improving performance.
●    Excellent communication (written & verbal), organisational skills, and ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
●    Skilled in using data to inform teaching and departmental decision making.
●    Innovation and future focus: willingness to adopt new teaching technologies, techniques, and pedagogical approaches.
●    Personal attributes such as adaptability, collegiality, approachability, and commitment to student welfare and growth.

QUALIFICATIONS
●    A recognised teaching qualification, such as a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) or equivalent.
●    Proven track record of leadership is essential  
●    Ongoing professional development in the field of education and Science teaching.  
●    Accreditation with NESA (New South Wales Education Standards Authority).
