ROLE SUMMARY:

The Head of Science at Reddam House plays a vital role in shaping the scientific and analytical environment of the school. This position is responsible for leading the Middle School Science Department in delivering a high-quality, student-centred education that aligns with Reddam House’s mission of fostering academic excellence and holistic development.

 

This leadership position leads by example in the classroom, overseeing curriculum development, ensuring the highest teaching standards, and inspiring a love of scientific inquiry and problem-solving in students. This role is central to driving the department’s vision and contributing to the broader educational objectives of Reddam House.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and manage the Middle School Science Department, including curriculum design, teaching strategies, and assessment practices, ensuring they meet the academic standards of Reddam House.
  • Oversee the professional development of Science teachers, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment that encourages continuous improvement.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the Science Department, using data-driven approaches to enhance student outcomes.
  • Teach Science classes across various year levels, demonstrating exemplary teaching practices and setting a high standard for student engagement and achievement.
  • Develop and implement initiatives to promote scientific literacy, experimental skills, and the appreciation of Science throughout the school.
  • Collaborate with other department heads and school leadership to integrate cross-curricular approaches and contribute to the overall educational strategy of Reddam House.
  • Manage departmental resources, ensuring the availability of high-quality teaching materials and laboratory equipment.
  • Organise and oversee extracurricular Science-related activities, such as science clubs, competitions, and enrichment programs.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and the broader school community regarding the Science curriculum and student progress.
  • Ensure the Science Department complies with all school policies, health and safety regulations, and relevant legislation.
  • Participate actively in school leadership meetings and contribute to strategic planning and decision-making processes. 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Extensive experience teaching Science at the secondary level, with a strong record of student achievement.
  • Demonstrated leadership in educational settings, with the ability to inspire and manage a team effectively.
  • In-depth knowledge of Stage 4 & 5 Science curriculum and pedagogy, with proven ability to implement engaging and effective teaching practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective engagement with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Skilled in using data to inform instruction and drive student improvement.
  • Proficient in departmental planning, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Experienced in coordinating and leading extracurricular Science activities.
  • Collaborative team player, able to work across departments and contribute to the broader school community.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science and a recognised secondary teaching qualification (essential).
  • Experience teaching Stage 4 and 5 Science (essential); Stage 6 and HSC experience (desirable).
  • Proven leadership experience in an educational context (essential).
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Willingness to contribute to extracurricular programs and school events beyond classroom duties.
