General Hand (Grounds & Garden)

ROLE SUMMARY:

The General Hand at Reddam House is responsible for ensuring the school's buildings, grounds, and equipment are maintained to a high standard, creating a safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing environment for staff, students, and visitors.

The role supports the school's mission by providing general operational support as a whole and overseeing the upkeep of the facilities, performing general handyman tasks as well as carrying out a range of function setups to ensure that the campus is a functional and inviting place conducive to an efficient learning environment.  This role is full time, working hours are 7am-3pm.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Maintain attractive, safe and well-presented school grounds, gardens, car parks, pathways and outdoor facilities.
• Carry out mowing, weeding, pruning, planting and general landscaping to a high standard.
• Prepare and maintain sporting fields, including mowing and line marking for school sporting activities.
• Perform routine grounds maintenance, including edging, weed control and upkeep of pond surrounds and landscaped areas.
• Ensure all grounds maintenance equipment and machinery are operated safely and maintained in good working order.
• Set up and support school events, assemblies, presentations and examinations, including basic audio-visual and technology requirements.
• Conduct daily operational inspections to identify and resolve maintenance, safety and facility issues across the campus.
• Maintain, repair and relocate school furniture, equipment and fittings, ensuring facilities remain functional and presentation-ready.
• Coordinate deliveries, storage and movement of equipment while supporting the efficient day-to-day operations of the school.
• Contribute to a safe and secure environment by reporting maintenance issues, supporting building safety checks, maintaining accurate records and working collaboratively with staff and contractors.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

• Previous experience in a maintenance, handyman, groundskeeping or facilities role, ideally within a school or education environment.
• Sound knowledge of workplace health and safety practices, with a strong focus on maintaining a safe environment.
• Experience operating and maintaining gardening equipment, machinery, tools and maintenance equipment.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, priorities and deadlines effectively.
• Confident communicator who can build positive relationships with staff, students, contractors and visitors.
• Ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.
• Proactive and solutions-focused, with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Adaptable and flexible approach, with a willingness to take on a wide range of maintenance and operational tasks.
• Traffic Control qualification (or willingness to obtain) and experience with AV equipment or event technology highly regarded.
• Physically fit and capable of undertaking manual tasks, including lifting, moving furniture and supporting occasional after-hours school events.
