KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be aware of general strengths and weaknesses by viewing records that are available, such as school reports, external and internal exam results, Check point, entrance tests etc.
  • Be aware of the student timetables, not only for academics, but also for extra-curricular activities, such as sporting, cultural and artistic commitments.
  • Encourage tutees to take advantage of all the opportunities offered by the school – the calendar indicates forthcoming events which invite students’ involvement and support. All students should take some social, cultural or creative interest outside of the classroom.
  • Recognise achievements and involvement in sporting, intellectual, musical and theatrical areas of school life, which can offer an insight into hidden talents that balance the academic picture.  A tutee appreciates the tutor’s attendance at fixtures, performances and other extra-curricular events.
  • Tutors should identify individual problems or celebrate breakthroughs, and share this information with other teachers.  Ideally the tutor would be the first person consulted by other colleagues in the event of disciplinary, academic or any other kind of difficulty or achievement.
  • Monitor Demerits and Mini Merits.
  • Monitor attendance, and inform the Year/Phase Coordinators and contact parents should attendance concerns be raised.
  • Tutors should be aware of any medical issues that may impact upon a tutees life at the school and keep teachers informed of such matters.
  • Try to be aware of and support tutees with any difficulties they may be facing at home or at school. This might include friendship patterns, family structures, interests and hobbies, contents of student records, social development, and relationships with other students and staff.
  • Keep parents fully informed and involved regarding students’ progress; academic or behavioural concerns. Follow through these concerns in consultation with the parents, specialist teacher/s and SLT.
  • Write tutor reports in line with the calendar dates.
