ROLE SUMMARY:

The English Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality English language and literature instruction that supports students’ academic, linguistic, and personal development. The role involves planning and implementing engaging lessons aligned with the school curriculum and assessment framework, while maintaining high standards of teaching and learning.

The English Teacher fosters a positive, inclusive, and stimulating classroom environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication. They assess student progress regularly, provide constructive feedback, and implement strategies to support differentiated learning needs.

In addition, the teacher contributes to the wider school community through collaboration, curriculum development, co-curricular activities, and participation in professional development initiatives. The role requires strong classroom management skills, subject expertise, and a commitment to continuous improvement and student achievement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging English lessons aligned with the curriculum.
• Teach reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills effectively.
• Deliver literature lessons that develop analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs.
• Prepare lesson plans in accordance with school guidelines and schemes of work.
• Use a variety of teaching strategies and resources to enhance learning.
• Assess, record, and report on student progress regularly.
• Mark classwork, homework, exams, and assessments promptly and accurately.
• Provide constructive written and verbal feedback to students.
• Prepare students for internal and external examinations.
• Maintain high expectations for student behaviour and achievement.
• Implement effective classroom management strategies.
• Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress.
• Attend staff meetings, CPDs, and departmental meetings.
• Contribute to curriculum planning and development.
• Support school events, activities, and extracurricular programs.
• Maintain accurate attendance and academic records.
• Follow safeguarding and child protection policies.
• Participate in school performance management processes.
• Monitor and support students with additional learning needs.
• Collaborate with colleagues to improve teaching practices.
• Ensure classroom displays and learning environments are stimulating and purposeful.
• Uphold school policies, procedures, and professional standards.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in English, English Literature, Education, or related field.
• Teaching qualification (PGCE, Teaching Diploma, or equivalent).
• Valid teaching license (where applicable).
• Minimum of 2 years teaching experience (preferred).
• Experience teaching secondary-level students (preferred).
• Experience preparing students for external examinations (advantage).
• Strong knowledge of curriculum standards.
• Safeguarding and child protection certification.
