Cover Supervisor

ROLE SUMMARY:

The Cover Supervisor will supervise lessons during staff absence, ensuring students continue to learn in a purposeful, safe, and calm environment. The post holder is not required to plan lessons but will deliver prepared work set by the class teacher or curriculum leader. The role also includes general support for learning and contribution to school life.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Lesson Supervision

• Supervise classes during teacher absences and ensure students complete assigned work.
• Manage behaviour according to school policies.
• Communicate instructions clearly and support students as needed.
• Collect and return completed work.

Classroom Management

• Maintain a safe, positive, and orderly learning environment.
• Apply behaviour and attendance policies consistently.
• Record attendance and behaviour concerns accurately.
• Refer serious issues to appropriate staff.

Learning Support

• Support individual students or small groups when required.
• Encourage engagement, independence, and responsibility.
• Work flexibly across various subjects and year groups.

Administrative Tasks

• Prepare materials and organise resources for cover lessons.
• Keep accurate cover and incident records.
• Support the Cover Manager/SLT with schedules and availability.
• Assist with general school administration when free.

Safeguarding & Pastoral Care

• Follow all Safeguarding and Child Protection procedures.
• Act as Form Tutor if needed and support daily student wellbeing.
• Report concerns promptly to designated staff.
• Build positive relationships with students.

Professional Conduct

• Attend briefings, training, and staff meetings.
• Follow school policies and professional standards.
• Work collaboratively with staff to ensure continuity in learning.
• Maintain confidentiality and professional behaviour.

Contribution to School Life

• Support school events and enrichment activities.
• Contribute to at least one ECA per term (if assigned).
• Promote the school’s values and mission.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

• Strong interpersonal skills and confidence in managing groups of young people.

• Ability to remain calm, professional, and in control in a classroom setting.

• Strong communication and organisational skills.

• Ability to follow instructions, routines, and school policies consistently.

• Commitment to safeguarding and student welfare.

• Educated to at least Level 3 / Baccalaureate equivalent or higher.
