ROLE SUMMARY:
Balboa Academy is a private school in Panama City, located in the heart of the capital's vibrant community. Offering students two diploma programs (US and Panamanian) and the only school in Panama to provide over 20 courses in their AP Program, our International School in Ciudad del Saber, Clayton is a beacon of educational excellence and a home for lifelong learners.
The High School Special Education Teacher is responsible for supporting students with diverse learning needs through individualized instruction, intervention, and inclusive educational practices within an American curriculum framework. The role focuses on ensuring students receive appropriate academic, social, and emotional support to achieve their full potential while collaborating closely with teachers, parents, counselors, and leadership teams.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), accommodation plans, and targeted interventions.
- Provide direct instruction and learning support to students with identified learning needs.
- Differentiate teaching strategies and materials to support student access to the curriculum.
- Monitor and assess student progress, maintaining accurate records and documentation.
- Support students in developing academic, organizational, and self-advocacy skills.
- Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to promote inclusive teaching practices.
- Provide guidance to staff on accommodations, modifications, and differentiation strategies.
- Participate in student support meetings, parent conferences, and multidisciplinary discussions.
- Liaise with counselors, psychologists, therapists, and external specialists where required.
- Support transitions for students entering, leaving, or moving within the school.
- Maintain confidential and accurate student records in line with school policies and legal requirements.
- Ensure accommodations for assessments and examinations are implemented appropriately.
- Contribute to student support documentation, progress reports, and review meetings.
- Monitor the effectiveness of interventions and adjust support plans as needed.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Education, Psychology, or related field.
- Valid teaching qualification/license.
- Previous experience supporting high school students with special educational needs.
- Strong understanding of differentiated instruction and inclusive educational practices.
- Experience developing and implementing IEPs or individualized support plans.
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multicultural and international school environment.
- Experience with American curriculum standards is preferred.
- Excellent English communication skills; additional languages are an advantage.
