The Opportunity

 

We are seeking a compassionate, proactive, and organised 1:1 Learning Support Assistant to provide individualized academic and social support to two high-functioning Grade 8 students with Special Educational Needs. Working closely with the SENCO and classroom teachers, the successful candidate will help students access the curriculum, develop executive functioning and social skills, and achieve their Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals within mainstream classrooms. This is a part-time (20 hours per week) position, engaged on a freelance basis through green receipts (recibos verdes).

 

The primary language of support is English; however, the successful candidate should also be able to communicate in Mandarin Chinese to translate classroom vocabulary to Chinese when absolutely necessary and facilitate communication with families.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Student Learning Support

· Provide one-to-one support to two Grade 8 students during academic lessons.

· Break down instructions, clarify concepts, adapt learning materials, and support organization, executive functioning, note-taking, and study skills.

· Encourage increasing independence while monitoring student progress and providing feedback to teachers and the SENCO.

Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Support

· Foster positive relationships that promote confidence, engagement, and wellbeing.

· Support students in developing self-regulation, self-advocacy, and positive peer interactions.

· Recognize and respond appropriately to anxiety, frustration, or sensory overload using agreed support strategies.

Communication and Collaboration

· Work closely with classroom teachers, the SENCO, and parents to ensure consistent support.

· Attend meetings, including IEP reviews and parent conferences, as required.

· Maintain accurate records of student progress and support provided.

· Communicate with families in Mandarin Chinese when appropriate.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

 

· Experience working with students with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or other special educational needs.

· An understanding of inclusive education and differentiated support strategies.

· Experience supporting students within mainstream secondary classrooms.

· Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

· The ability to promote independence while providing appropriate support.

· Fluency in English (required).

· Conversational or fluent Mandarin Chinese (preferred) to support communication with families and translate classroom vocabulary to Chinese when absolutely necessary.
