ROLE SUMMARY:

 

The School Nurse at Reddam House plays an essential role in fostering the health, wellbeing, and safety of students across the Primary and Secondary levels. This position involves assessing and providing care to students attending the sick bay, adhering to best practice healthcare guidelines, and ensuring up-to-date, accurate health records. The School Nurse is responsible for administering daily medications, managing medical care plans, and maintaining first aid resources. Additionally, the role requires collaboration with teachers, staff, and parents to ensure a holistic approach to student wellbeing, consistent with Reddam House’s commitment to student care and safety.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Assess students attending the sick bay, implement appropriate care plans, and determine when referral to a GP or hospital is needed.
  • Provide high-quality, best practice care, and administer daily medications as required.
  • Maintain and implement medical care plans, and manage emergency medications such as Ventolin and EpiPens.
  • Ensure all first aid kits are adequately stocked and maintained throughout the school.
  • Oversee the upkeep of medical equipment and first aid supplies in the sick bay.
  • Regularly update student medical records on TASS, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Keep a daily log of student visits to the sick bay and complete incident reports as needed.
  • Participate in emergency response protocols, including managing urgent medical situations and calling for ambulance services when required.
  • Provide first aid support during school events, sports days, excursions, and camps.
  • Support staff with first aid, CPR, and emergency equipment training (e.g., defibrillators).
  • Communicate with staff and parents regarding student wellbeing, ensuring proper follow-up care is arranged.
  • Ensure compliance with local health regulations and contribute to school health policies.
  • Carry out additional duties as directed by the Principal to support the health and safety of the school community.

 

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE 

  • Experience in paediatric or school nursing, or general nursing with experience in a similar setting.
  • Strong knowledge of first aid procedures, emergency response, and infection control.
  • Ability to manage chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and allergies within a school environment.
  • Familiarity with child development and age-appropriate care for students from Primary and Secondary school.
  • Proficiency in using health record systems such as TASS, with excellent organisational skills to manage medical resources.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Registered Nurse qualification.
  • Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and Anaphylaxis training.
  • Valid Working with Children Check (WWCC).
  • Additional certifications in mental health first aid or school health nursing are desirable.
  • Training in child protection and safeguarding procedures, with the ability to identify and report signs of neglect or abuse.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ongoing participation in professional development and health training.
  • Flexibility to attend school events or emergencies outside regular school hours when necessary.
  • Compliance with Reddam House and NSW health and safety regulations.
  • Support in developing health policies and procedures in line with current public health guidelines.
