ROLE SUMMARY:
The Head of Physics at Reddam House North Shore plays a vital role in shaping the scientific and analytical environment of the school. This position is responsible for leading Physics within the Science Department in delivering a high-quality, student-centred education that aligns with Reddam House’s mission of fostering academic excellence and holistic development.
The Head of Physics will oversee curriculum development, ensure the highest teaching standards, and inspire a love of scientific inquiry and problem-solving in students. This role is central to driving the department’s vision and contributing to the broader educational objectives of Reddam House North Shore.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and manage Physics within the Science Department, including curriculum design, teaching strategies, and assessment practices, ensuring they meet the academic standards of Reddam House North Shore.
- Oversee the professional development of Physics teachers, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment that encourages continuous improvement.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of Physics within the Science Department, using data-driven approaches to enhance student outcomes.
- Teach Science classes across various year levels, demonstrating exemplary teaching practices and setting a high standard for student engagement and achievement.
- Develop and implement initiatives to promote scientific literacy, experimental skills, and the appreciation of Physics throughout the school.
- Collaborate with other Science teachers, department heads and school leadership to integrate cross-curricular approaches and contribute to the overall educational strategy of Reddam House North Shore.
- Manage departmental resources, including budgeting, and ensure the availability of high-quality teaching materials and laboratory equipment.
- Organise and oversee extracurricular Physics -related activities, such as science clubs, competitions, and enrichment programs.
- Act as a mentor and coach to Physics and other science teachers, providing feedback, support, and guidance to help them reach their full potential.
- Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and the broader school community regarding the Physics curriculum and student progress.
- Ensure the Physics teaching within the Science Department complies with all school policies, health and safety regulations, and relevant legislation.
- Participate actively in school leadership meetings and contribute to strategic planning and decision-making processes.
- May be required to assume the role of Year Coordinator and provide pastoral care for the relevant year group of students, as needed by the school.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Proven experience teaching Physics at the appropriate school level, with a strong record of student achievement
- Demonstrated leadership, ideally in a school setting, with the ability to lead and inspire teams.
- Strong knowledge of Physics pedagogy and curriculum design, with effective teaching implementation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engaging students, parents, and colleagues.
- Skilled in using data to inform teaching and enhance student outcomes.
- Proficient in managing budgets, resources, and departmental planning.
- Experience leading extracurricular activities related to Physics.
- Collaborative team player, able to work across departments and with the wider school community.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in Physics or a related field.
- Recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, QTS).
- Additional qualifications in educational leadership or management (desirable).
- Ongoing professional development in education and Physics teaching.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Working with Children Check.
- Willingness to assist with lunch/playground supervision and student drop-off/pick-up.
- Availability to support extracurricular activities and attend school events beyond regular hours.
