ROLE SUMMARY:
The Head of Geography at Reddam House North Shore plays a vital role in shaping the historical and analytical learning environment of the school. This position is responsible for leading the Geography Department in delivering a high-quality, student-centred education that aligns with Reddam House’s mission of fostering academic excellence and holistic development.
The Head of Geography will oversee curriculum development, ensure the highest teaching standards, and inspire a love of historical inquiry and critical thinking in students. This role is central to driving the department’s vision and contributing to the broader educational objectives of Reddam House North Shore.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and manage the Geography Department, including curriculum design, teaching strategies, and assessment practices, ensuring they meet the academic standards of Reddam House.
- Oversee the professional development of Geography teachers, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment that encourages continuous improvement.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of the Geography Department, using data-driven approaches to enhance student outcomes.
- Teach Geography classes across various year levels, demonstrating exemplary teaching practices and setting a high standard for student engagement and achievement.
- Develop and implement initiatives to promote historical literacy, critical analysis skills, and the appreciation of Geography throughout the school.
- Collaborate with other department heads and school leadership to integrate cross-curricular approaches and contribute to the overall educational strategy of Reddam House.
- Manage departmental resources, ensuring the availability of high-quality teaching materials.
- Organise and oversee extracurricular Geography-related activities, such as clubs, competitions, and enrichment programs.
- Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and the broader school community regarding the geography curriculum and student progress.
- Ensure the Geography Department complies with all school policies, health and safety regulations, and relevant legislation.
- Participate actively in school leadership meetings and contribute to strategic planning and decision-making processes.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Proven experience in teaching Geography at the relevant school levels, with a strong track record of student success.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, ideally within a school setting, with the ability to manage and inspire a team.
- Deep knowledge of Geography pedagogy and curriculum design, with the ability to implement effective teaching practices.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Experience in using data to inform teaching practices and improve student outcomes.
- Proficiency in managing budgets, resources, and departmental planning.
- Experience in organising and leading extracurricular activities related to Geography.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- A degree in Geography or a related field and a relevant Secondary teaching qualification are essential.
- Experience teaching across various year levels is essential, with experience in senior levels (including HSC) highly desirable.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- A valid Working with Children Check.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development and training as required.
- Availability to contribute to extracurricular activities and school events beyond regular teaching hours.
