Early Years Educator

ROLE SUMMARY:

The International School of Milan is currently seeking an Early Years Educator for a maternity cover role. 

Founded in 1958, IS Milan caters for over 900 students from more than 60 nationalities. Our campus, which opened in September 2013, incorporates a theatre, swimming pool and full-size gymnasium as well as specialist classrooms, labs, libraries, arts and music areas. All of our sections are fully authorised for International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes – Primary Years Programme (PYP) from Kindergarten to Grade 6; Middle Years Programme (MYP) from Grades 7 to 11; Diploma Programme (DP) in Grades 12 and 13. IS Milan is the most established IB world school in Italy and regularly exceeds global averages in the IBDP. In addition, we opened our Boarding House in 2018, which has added immensely to the sense of family at IS Milan. 

Our Early Years Educators are skilled in teaching a range of abilities within the classroom and are able to work with small groups to help students achieve their full potential. They embrace diversity, within our international setting, ensuring that learning is inclusive of students of all nationalities, profiles and linguistic abilities. They ensure that student agency is at the centre of the learning experience, encouraging innovation and creativity, within a caring and principled learning environment. 

It is essential that the person appointed has the appropriate teaching qualifications to work with children aged 2 – 3 years old, as required by Italian law. Ideally, we are seeking someone with previous experience of the IB PYP curriculum, but we are flexible to applicants from other curricula who are committed to high standards and innovative approaches to learning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Deliver high-quality, play-based Early Years education for children aged 2–5.
• Plan and implement engaging learning experiences that support holistic development (cognitive, social, emotional, and physical).
• Create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes curiosity, independence, and wellbeing.
• Observe, assess, and track children’s progress, using evidence to inform planning and next steps.
• Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding children’s development and learning progress.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues to deliver consistent, high-quality Early Years provision.
• Support early language, communication, numeracy, and social development through structured and play-based activities.
• Contribute to the wider school community, including events, trips, and extracurricular activities.
• Implement safeguarding, behaviour, and pastoral care policies consistently.
• Reflect on practice and engage in continuous professional development to improve outcomes for learners.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

• Recognised Early Years teaching qualification.
• Experience working with children aged 2–5 in an Early Years or nursery setting.
• Understanding of child development and early years pedagogy, including knowledge of EYFS, Reggio Emilia, or equivalent frameworks.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with children, parents, and colleagues.
• Strong classroom management, organisation, and planning skills with a focus on high-quality learning outcomes.
• A passionate, child-centred approach with the ability to inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning.
• A reflective and adaptable mindset, committed to continuous improvement and professional growth.
