We are seeking a passionate and strategic College Counselor to join our virtual student support team. This fully remote role focuses on guiding high school students and their families through the college and post-secondary education planning process – including self-assessment, exploration, applications, financial aid, and final decision-making. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of college admissions, experience in establishing a comprehensive college counseling program. strong virtual communication skills, and a commitment to helping students navigate their next steps with confidence and clarity.

 

This is a remote position, with the occasional need to travel to Washington, D.C. to engage directly with colleagues and foster strong professional relationships. Occasional travel domestically or abroad may also be required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Virtual College Counseling & Advising:

  • Provide individualized college counseling to assigned students via video conferencing, phone calls, email, and the school's Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Assist students in developing realistic and appropriate post-secondary plans based on their academic profile, interests, strengths, and aspirations.
  • Counsel and guide student-athletes on NCAA eligibility requirements, academic standards, and the college recruitment process, maintaining strong collaboration with coaches and athletic staff to ensure comprehensive student support.
  • Guide students through college search and selection processes using online tools and resources.
  • Advise students on high school course selection in relation to college admission requirements.
  • Support students in understanding and navigating standardized testing (SAT/ACT/AP), including registration, test preparation strategies, and score reporting, advising on test-optional policies.

 

Application Support:

  • Provide comprehensive support throughout the college application process, including essay brainstorming/review, activity list development, and application completion (Common App, Coalition App, university-specific applications).
  • Write compelling and insightful counselor letters of recommendation.
  • Oversee the timely submission of transcripts, school profiles, and other supporting documents electronically.

 

Financial Aid & Scholarship Guidance:

  • Educate students and families about financial aid processes (FAFSA, CSS Profile), types of aid, and scholarship opportunities.
  • Conduct virtual workshops and provide resources on financial literacy and affording college.
  • Assist families in understanding financial aid award letters.

 

Program Development & Delivery:

  • Establish a comprehensive college counseling program to ensure all students receive individualized guidance and support throughout the college exploration, application, and decision-making process.
  • Develop and deliver engaging virtual workshops, webinars, and presentations for students and parents on various aspects of the college planning process.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive online resources (guides, checklists, timelines, videos) accessible through the school's LMS or website.
  • Utilize data to track student progress, application milestones, college acceptances, and matriculation outcomes.

 

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Build strong rapport and maintain proactive communication with students and parents/guardians in a virtual setting.
  • Collaborate effectively with remote colleagues, including teachers, advisors, and administrators, to support student success.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with college admissions representatives virtually.
  • Stay current on trends and changes in college admissions, standardized testing, and financial aid through professional development and networking.

 

Technlogy & Administration:

  • Proficiently utilize the school's LMS, student information system (SIS), video conferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet), and college planning software (e.g., Naviance, Scoir, MaiaLearning, Cialfo).
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records related to the college counseling process.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • Master's degree in School Counseling, College Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or a closely related field. 
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in college admissions, and college advising.
  • Strong knowledge of NCAA eligibility rules, academic standards, and compliance guidelines, with proven experience supporting student-athletes in the college admissions process.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with athletic staff and coaches to meet the unique needs of student-athletes.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with technology, including online communication tools, video conferencing, Learning Management Systems, student information systems, and standard office software (Microsoft Office Suite/Google Workspace).
  • Deep knowledge of the US higher education landscape, college admissions processes, application platforms, and financial aid procedures (FAFSA/CSS Profile).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, specifically adapted for effective virtual interaction.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage a diverse caseload remotely.
  • Proven ability to build rapport and connect with students and families in an online environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a remote team.
  • Reliable high-speed internet access and a dedicated, professional home office space.

  • Willingness and ability to travel within the U.S. and abroad as needed.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working as a counselor in an online/virtual school setting.
  • Experience using specific college planning platforms (e.g., Naviance, Scoir, MaiaLearning, Cialfo).
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, including first-generation college students, students with learning differences, or international applicants.
  • Bilingual abilities.
