ROLE SUMMARY:

 

The British School of Madrid is seeking an exceptional Teaching & Learning Leader (TLL) for the Modern Foreign Languages department in Secondary. The TLL will drive academic excellence, lead a motivated team of MFL teachers, and ensure alignment with the school’s Responsive Action Plans (RAPs). The role focuses on raising academic and pastoral standards, supporting high-quality teaching, and helping every student reach their full potential.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Lead the MFL team to deliver an ambitious, high-quality curriculum across Key Stages.

  • Oversee schemes of work, ensuring strong pedagogy, progression and subject mastery.

  • Manage assessment practices that promote progress and high achievement.

  • Develop and refine the MFL curriculum in line with school priorities.

  • Support staff performance management and identify professional development needs.

  • Work with Year Leaders to align academic and pastoral targets.

  • Showcase student achievements through events, publications and digital platforms.

  • Promote and implement the school’s digital learning strategy within the department

  • Contribute to whole-school improvement and maintain high BSO inspection standards

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

 

  • Minimum 3 years of recent, relevant teaching experience across at least two Key Stages in a UK, international or bilingual school following the English National Curriculum.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a T&L area, department, or pastoral middle-leadership role.

  • Recent professional development in Teaching & Learning.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject and recognised teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent).

  • Proficiency in at least one MFL at C2 level and English at minimum B2 (or willingness to achieve B2 within one year, with school support).

  • Strong ability to motivate teams, raise academic standards and lead strategic improvement.
