ROLE SUMMARY:

For September 2025, Wetherby Senior School is looking to appoint one Graduate Sports Assistant who can contribute to the School’s sport and co-curricular programmes.  Our sports programme gives boys the opportunity to compete at a high level in a range of sports but also understands the importance of sport in the development of all young men.  We are looking for team players with a love of sport who can engage and motivate the pupils and are committed to developing a love of sport and an understanding of the importance of physical fitness in all the boys at the School

 

We welcome all Sports degree subjects, and the successful candidates will support with the administration of the PE & Games Department as well as covering lessons and other activities when not on the sports field.  Where appropriate, experience of working with the pupils in the classroom can be offered and experiences gained in other areas of the School.  Professional development opportunities will also be available.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • High expectations of pupils in every aspect of their work.
  • Following departmental schemes of work effectively.
  • Using rewards and sanctions effectively.
  • Providing high quality written and verbal reports to parents.
  • Keeping up-to-date with developments in their subject.
  • Making a positive contribution to the Physical Education Department enrichment programme.
  • Attending department meetings and undertaking administrative tasks that are designated by the Head of Department, thereby contributing to a sense of teamwork and aiding professional development.
  • Attend INSET as required by the Head of Department to help share the latest and best practice in teaching the subject.
  • Help to organise trips and encourage boys to take part in competitions.
  • To support and where appropriate lead teams in the ‘major sports’, accompanying them on inter-school fixtures and refereeing as necessary. 
  • To support with the administration of the Sports Department and other areas of the School as directed by the Director of Sport or the Deputy Head (Staff & Operations).
  • To cover lessons or other activities as required when not engaged with the School’s sports or co-curricular programme.
  • If required being a co-tutor to a group of boys to support their academic and personal development.
  • Undertaking supervisory duties in the school as required
  • Depending on the interests and abilities of each teacher, offer one or more activities as part of the co-curricular programme. This might, for example, involve assisting with sport or drama, running an academic or cultural society or helping with Community Service.
  • Attend staff meetings, whole school staff training, parents’ evenings and any other functions as required by the Headmaster or Senior Deputy Head.

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

 

  • Recently graduated from university.
  • Experience/qualifications in playing and/or coaching in one of our major sports (rugby, football, cricket, tennis).
  • A First Aid qualification or be willing to undertake such a qualification.
  • Experience and/or interest in working with young people and be keen to pursue a career in education or coaching.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with all members of the School community.
  • A genuine commitment to pastoral care and the welfare and safeguarding of pupils.
  • Empathy with the vision, values and aims of the School.
  • An adaptable and flexible approach to work.
  • A genuine commitment to pastoral care and the welfare and safeguarding of pupils.
  • Interests and abilities that can enhance the School’s co-curricular programme.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills.
  • Excellent administrative, organisational, and IT skills.
