ROLE SUMMARY:

Chepstow House School is an established 3 form entry, Co-ed Prep with a nursery attached and outstanding facilities within the Notting Hill Gate area. It is a growing school offering opportunities for staff development and career progression.

We are seeking a committed and enthusiastic Head of Science who will promote and develop a positive and engaging learning environment.  You will build strong relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues, contributing to the wider life of the school and maintaining a classroom environment that encourages growth, respect, and high standards.

 

This is a permanent role starting in September 2026.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To teach science to groups of students from all abilities across years 3 – 6 and beyond through fostering intellectual curiosity.
  • Plan, evaluate, and revise the science curriculum, lesson content, materials and methods of teaching from Reception and in line with senior school requirements.
  • To take into account the differing ability lessons of students and differentiate work accordingly.
  • To encourage all students to be actively engaged in their own learning and in reviewing their progress against targets.
  • Introduce and teach correct use of a variety of science equipment.
  • Keep up to date on all curriculum aspects through internal and external insets.
  • To ensure that there is a high standard of display work in the laboratory, which is changed frequently.
  • Take the CARE and STEM clubs or introduce other relevant clubs.
  • Ensure enrichment and HLP activities are catered for.
  • Organise activities for Science Week
  • Review and update annually the Science Policy.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • Qualified teacher (PGCE, QTS or equivalent) with ability to teach Science to years 3-6
  • Strong subject knowledge and the ability to inspire and engage pupils.
  • Able to motivate pupils and encourage positive attitudes to learning.
  • Confident in planning and assessment, including adapting work to meet individual needs and tracking progress effectively.
  • Good classroom management skills, maintaining a calm, respectful and productive environment.
  • Experience supporting pupil wellbeing and pastoral care, with a clear understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills, able to build positive relationships with pupils, parents and colleagues.
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Well organised, able to manage workload, prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Professional in approach, including presentation, conduct and contribution to school life.
  • Committed to ongoing professional development.
  • Positive, energetic and flexible, with a practical, can-do attitude.
