ROLE SUMMARY:
Wetherby Preparatory School is undergoing a dynamic period of development in which innovative thinking is encouraged, and every teacher’s contribution is valued.
Wetherby Preparatory School is an independent boys’ preparatory school (ages 7 – 13) of 350 boys set in the dynamic area of Marylebone in London. Wetherby prepares its pupils for many of the top day and boarding senior schools in the country and therefore works at a level significantly above National Curriculum expectations. It is part of the Inspired Education Group of Schools.

Reporting to the Head and Deputy Head Academic, the Head of Science will uphold the aims and objectives of the school and promote these whenever possible. The successful candidate will endeavour to provide his or her pupils with the highest standards of education and care in accordance with the school’s aims, policies and procedures

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership
- To lead and manage a team of two science teachers and 1 science technician
- To ensure the delivery of science meets the requirements of an independent school which prepares boys for 11+, Pre Test and Common Entrance assessment processes to both London Day Schools and Boarding Schools
Teaching
- To teach Science to boys from Year 5 – Year 8
- To plan and prepare lessons and work collaboratively with teachers in the department, as well as school wide
- To manage and equip the laboratory with the science technician’s help, working within the budget for the department
- To produce written schemes of work and weekly plans for each lesson taught and to review these regularly
- To evaluate planning regularly
Pastoral
- To be a Form Teacher for a Year 5 class
- To encourage each child to reach his individual potential
- To ensure that pupils are well-behaved i.e. that they are both courteous and conduct themselves in a safe manner
- To ensure that pupils are aware of the school rules
Other
- To adhere to all safety guidelines and write and review risk assessments for the laboratory on a regular basis
- To communicate, when necessary, with persons or bodies outside the school
- To participate in staff meetings, open days, social evenings etc as required
- To work co-operatively with colleagues, including teaching assistants, offering help and support as required

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
Qualifications and Experience
- Qualified teacher status with some experience in a leadership role.
- Strong understanding of the requirements of the science curriculum and Common Entrance requirements
- Strong understanding of school processes and pastoral care.
- Some experience with managing a team in a very busy school setting.
Skills and Attributes
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
- Strong leadership and line management capabilities.
- Ability to communicate effectively with pupils, parents, and staff.
- Proficient in the use of school management systems (e.g., iSAMS).
- Commitment to maintaining high standards in all areas of school life.
- A team player with a good sense of humour and emotional awareness
