ROLE SUMMARY:

Wetherby Senior School was founded in 2015 and is a member of the Inspired Education Group of Schools. There are approximately 450 boys on roll, all of whom study at least one language for 5 years and we regularly add at least 0.5 of a grade Value Added at both IGCSE and A Level. Our students achieve grades that allow them to gain places at top UK universities such as; Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, Durham and UCL and universities abroard such as the University of Chicago, Georgetown, Princeton, Bocconi in Milan and the IE Business School Madrid.

Our emphasis on educating the whole boy means that all members of staff are expected to contribute to the pastoral care of a group of students as a Form Tutor as well as contributing to the School’s co-curricular activities.

 

Wetherby Senior are now looking for a Head of Biology (with some Chemistry) to start in January 2026. As a teacher at Wetherby you will have the opportunity to build your experience of working with a team of specialists and to develop the teaching of Biology and Chemistry in interesting and innovative ways, with the support of the Head of Science.  The post would suit a talented teacher with several years’ experience looking to develop their leadership or a more experienced colleague who would like the freedom and challenge of working in a forward-looking school. Teaching staff at Wetherby Senior School have experience of teaching in both the maintained and independent sectors and colleagues looking to move into independent education are warmly encouraged to apply.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the Biology curriculum, ensuring high-quality schemes of work, effective assessment, and engaging enrichment opportunities.
  • Inspire academic curiosity, keeping the department up to date with subject developments and organising trips, competitions, and co-curricular activities.
  • Manage and support departmental staff, including induction, lesson observations, feedback, and professional development.
  • Oversee behaviour management, pastoral care, and ensure staff use rewards, sanctions, and pupil support effectively.
  • Monitor pupil progress through data tracking, work scrutiny, and academic reports, while advising on subject choices and university applications.
  • Build links with universities and external organisations to enhance opportunities for students.
  • Lead departmental administration, including budgets, resources, policies, handbooks, inspections, and health & safety compliance.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports, manage teaching spaces, and ensure effective use of digital learning tools (EdTech, VLE, etc.).
  • Contribute to whole-school life through pastoral duties, tutoring, co-curricular activities, and supervisory responsibilities.
  • Uphold school values and attend staff meetings, training, and school events as required.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • The ability to teach Biology to A level and ideally Chemistry to at least GCSE.
  • The ability to inspire others and lead by example.
  • Outstanding subject knowledge, academic qualifications and be able to communicate their enthusiasm.
  • The ability to deliver dynamic and effective lessons to the full ability range of pupils at the School.
  • Some experience of successful management of or within an academic department.
  • Highly effective communication skills for dealing with all members of the School community.
  • A commitment to pastoral care and the welfare and safeguarding of pupils.
  • Interests and abilities that can enhance the School’s co-curricular programme.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills.
  • Excellent administrative, organisational and IT skills.
