ROLE SUMMARY:

Wetherby Preparatory School is an independent boys’ preparatory school (ages 7 – 13) of 350 boys set in the dynamic area of Marylebone in London. Wetherby prepares its pupils for many of the top day and boarding senior schools in the country and therefore works at a level significantly above National Curriculum expectations. 

 

Wetherby Prep now seeks an inspiring and dynamic Head of Art to lead our thriving Art department and to teach boys in Years 3–8. This is an exciting opportunity to shape an ambitious, skills-rich curriculum, nurture creativity in every child, and champion the visual arts across the school community. The role combines subject leadership with high-quality classroom teaching and the organisation of exhibitions, trips, and enrichment opportunities. This is a full time, permanent position starting in January 2026. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the vision and strategic direction for Art across Years 3–8.
  • Design and deliver a broad curriculum covering drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, and basic ceramics.
  • Ensure progression of skills and knowledge at each stage, including preparation for senior school scholarships (11+/13+).
  • Deliver engaging and challenging lessons that inspire creativity in pupils of all abilities.
  • Differentiate effectively to support and extend learning.
  • Introduce pupils to ceramics (pinch pots, slab building, wheel throwing); no prior experience required – training provided, but willingness to learn is essential.
  • Oversee resources, studio spaces, and departmental budget.
  • Organise exhibitions, competitions, and enrichment opportunities within and beyond school.
  • Build partnerships with galleries, visiting artists, and the wider community.
  • Run and support art clubs, workshops, and co-curricular activities.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • A passion for teaching and a commitment to nurturing creativity.
  • Strong teaching experience at KS2 and/or KS3.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and engage pupils of all abilities.
  • Reflective, collaborative, and well-organised approach.
  • Willingness to learn and apply ceramics techniques
  • Experience of leading a subject or department is desirable 
  • Experience in preparing pupils for art scholarships is desirable
