ROLE SUMMARY:
Wetherby Senior School was founded in 2015 and is a member of the Inspired Education Group of Schools. There are approximately 450 boys on roll, all of whom study at least one language for 5 years and we regularly add at least 0.5 of a grade Value Added at both IGCSE and A Level. Our students achieve grades that allow them to gain places at top UK universities such as; Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, Durham and UCL and universities abroard such as the University of Chicago, Georgetown, Princeton, Bocconi in Milan and the IE Business School Madrid.
At Wetherby Senior School we seek to employ highly professional teachers with the ability and commitment to enhance the life of the School and to work effectively and collaboratively with all members of the School community to further establish and develop the School. Our emphasis on educating the whole boy means that all members of staff are expected to contribute to the pastoral care of a group of students as a Form Tutor as well as contributing to the School’s co-curricular activities.
We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and inspirational Assistant Head to join the team from September 2026. The appointee will be an integral member of the Senior Management Team and report directly to the Deputy Head (Academic) and to the Headmaster on all matters relating to staff, their development and their deployment. The post represents an exciting opportunity for a teacher with the necessary vision and ambition to help the School continue to develop its offering of a first rate academic education for boys. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensuring excellence from all staff in relation to their academic, pastoral and co-curricular involvement in school life;
- Taking responsibility for all aspects of staff development, including (but not limited to) the professional review and development process, continuing professional development needs and budgeting, linking colleagues to appropriate Inspired CPD courses, and leading the organisation (with input from other senior colleagues and in light of the school development plan) of all staff INSET;
- Working the PA to the Headmaster to ensure that all statutorily required training courses are completed in a timely manner;
- Overseeing the processes for new staff induction, and oversight of the probation process
- Overseeing the off-boarding process for departing staff
- Supporting the ECT lead teacher and co-ordinating between them and other senior colleagues to ensure appropriate staff training;
- Organising daily staff cover needs in a fair and consistent manner, taking account of other school roles and responsibilities; working with the Headmaster, HR team and line managers to monitor staff absence patterns and support colleagues back to work;
- Meeting regularly with the Common Room Committee to understand any broader support requests the staff may have and working to further develop a positive common room spirit;
- As required, attending school events, functions and representing the school as an outward-facing member of the senior team. Where necessary deputising for the Headmaster or Deputy Heads.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
- A strong academic record with a good honours degree in or closely related to, a subject taught at Wetherby Senior School;
- Management and leadership experience in a middle management role (e.g. as Head of Department/ Head of Year) or senior role (Assistant or Deputy Head) within which changes will have been implemented that have had a positive outcome for pupils;
- Experience of managing, or the ability to manage, parental enquiries, concerns or anxieties with authority and reassurance;
- The ability to lead, to manage, to delegate effectively and to work collaboratively and build teams;
- Experience of, and an empathy with, the particular demands on pupils and staff of a growing and ambitious school.
- A confident, clear communication style, being able to champion the school’s educational offering effectively on paper and in person.
- Demonstrable resilience, drive, organisational ability and stamina to handle a large volume of varied work with precision, tact and good judgment.
- Evidence of a commitment to ongoing professional development.
- A personality which inspires respect and trust and will enable a strong rapport to be built with the pupils.
- The ability to maintain a visible and effective presence in and around the school community, setting an example to all members of the community.
- An ability to plan strategically and to implement plans effectively.
- A commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of the pupils by insisting upon, the highest standards of safeguarding and pastoral care.
- A sympathy with the aims and ethos of the School and a commitment to the all-round ethos, co-curricular programme and the approach to pastoral care.
