ROLE SUMMARY:

Wetherby School is a thriving and highly successful non-selective, independent school in Notting Hill for boys aged 4 to 8. The school is heavily oversubscribed and extremely successful in securing pupils’ entry into the preparatory school of their choice.

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Academic Lead to play a key role in shaping the learning experience for our Reception pupils. Working closely with the Head of Reception, Headmaster, and Senior Management Team (SMT), this role ensures excellence in teaching, learning, and assessment across the Reception year group. You will lead planning meetings, drive curriculum development, oversee assessments, and mentor staff to maintain the highest educational standards. As a key figure in the leadership team, you will also deputise for the Head of Reception, contribute to strategic decision-making, and enhance the overall Reception learning environment.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure consistency of teaching and learning across the four classes along with the Assistant Head (Academic).
  • Prepare, implement and review the policy documentation pertinent to the Reception year group.
  • In conjunction with the head of Reception and Assistant Head (Academic), ensure that the systems in place for assessment and their implementation have a direct impact on raising standards in the classroom.
  • Lead weekly Reception planning meetings.
  • Ensure that assessments are carried out correctly within the given timeframe and recorded correctly (PIPs, phonics etc).
  • Demonstrate good practice in Reception and support all staff who teach or provide teaching support within these year groups, including coordinating INSET and other professional development opportunities.
  • Develop new ideas / strategies for Reception
  • Relay any Reception staffing / parental / other pertinent issues to the Senior Management Team.
  • Manage the Reception indoor area (including updating notice boards, resources and book cupboards).
  • To be aware of, and to work with the ICT Leader to inform all teachers of ICT developments and resources in relation to Reception and to regularly update the school website.
  • Deputise for the Head of reception in his absence

  • Have knowledge of the Reception curriculum
  • Have previous management experience
  • Be an excellent and innovative classroom practitioner
  • Have energy and commitment for the post and the ability to work in harmony with colleagues
  • Have outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with a high level of IT literacy
  • Have excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills
  • Be able to plan, monitor, evaluate, audit and review proactively
  • Be able to manage and lead change successfully
