OUR SCHOOL:
Reddam House Umhlanga is seeking a dynamic and experienced to provide strong leadership and ensure a holistic and high-quality educational experience for students and staff within the College School phase. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in fostering a positive learning environment, driving academic excellence, and promoting the overall well-being and development of both students and teachers. ROLE SUMMARY:
The Head of Learning Support is responsible for leading, managing, and coordinating all aspects of learning support across the Foundation Phase (Grade R–3), Intermediate Phase (Grade 4–6), and Senior Preparatory (Grade 7). This includes overseeing the identification and support of students with diverse learning needs, the implementation of accommodations and interventions, and the management of external specialists (e.g., occupational therapists, speech therapists, educational psychologists). The role requires collaboration with teachers, parents, and the school leadership team to ensure that all students are supported in achieving their full potential within the mainstream environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- develop and implement the school’s learning support policy in line with school vision and relevant educational legislation;
- provide leadership and direction to the learning support team across phases;
- act as the key liaison between teachers, parents, therapists, and external stakeholders;
- maintain oversight of all learning support programmes, ensuring consistency and effectiveness across Grade R–7.
- oversee the identification, screening, and assessment of students with barriers to learning;
- coordinate the development and monitoring of Individual Support Plans (ISPs) and accommodations for identified students;
- ensure accommodations for assessments and examinations are applied fairly, consistently, and in line with regulatory requirements;
- track and monitor the progress of students receiving support and adjust interventions as needed;
- support the transition of students between phases (Foundation → Intermediate → Senior Preparatory).
- provide guidance to teachers on inclusive teaching strategies, differentiation, and classroom-based accommodations;
- conduct regular professional development workshops for teachers on topics such as learning barriers, differentiation, classroom management, and assistive technology;
- collaborate with teachers to integrate learning support strategies into everyday teaching practices.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
- A teaching qualification (B.Ed. or equivalent)
- Postgraduate qualification in Inclusive Education, Educational Support, or related field (advantageous).
- Registration with SACE.
- Minimum 5 years’ teaching experience, with at least 2 years in a learning support or inclusive education environment.
- Experience in working collaboratively with external therapists and specialists.
- strong knowledge of inclusive education, barriers to learning, and accommodations;
- ability to design and oversee intervention programmes across multiple grades;
- excellent interpersonal and communication skills with learners, parents, staff, and external professionals;
- organisational and time-management skills to handle multiple responsibilities;
- leadership and team management skills.
- empathy, patience, and commitment to student well-being;
- knowledge of relevant policies and regulatory frameworks for concessions and accommodations in South Africa.
