ROLE SUMMARY:

Size and Location

Blue Valley School is a private, bilingual (English–Spanish) college-preparatory school located in Guachipelín, Escazú. Founded in 1989, the school serves a vibrant community of around 800 students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, representing some 40 nationalities, on an expansive, modern campus.

What Makes the School Unique

Blue Valley is an authorized IB World School with more than twenty years of experience delivering the IB Diploma Programme. Uniquely, it offers students up to three simultaneous graduation pathways: the Costa Rican National Baccalaureate, a US High School Diploma accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), and the IB Diploma. The school blends the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Education curriculum with leading US and international frameworks, and its youngest learners benefit from an Inspired Early Years approach drawing on Reggio Emilia and Montessori methods. Intentionally small IB class sizes allow for highly personalized instruction.

Why the School Is Attractive to Candidates

Educators join a well-established, internationally minded community with a strong record of results: IB Diploma outcomes consistently exceed the global average, with graduates admitted to Ivy League and other leading universities across the USA, Canada, Latin America and Europe. The school offers a collaborative, multicultural professional environment, small class sizes, ongoing professional development, and the chance to live in Escazú—one of Costa Rica’s most desirable areas—within easy reach of the country’s renowned beaches, rainforests and “pura vida” quality of life.

Key Purpose of the Position

The IB Diploma Programme Coordinator provides academic, pedagogical and administrative leadership for the IB Diploma Programme, ensuring full compliance with IB standards and practices. The Coordinator serves as the principal link between the school and the International Baccalaureate Organization, championing the IB philosophy and learner profile while supporting teachers and students to achieve excellent outcomes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Lead the day-to-day management, organization and continuous improvement of the IB Diploma Programme, ensuring alignment with IB standards and practices.
  2. Act as the primary liaison with the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), managing communications, programme authorization, evaluation and re-authorization processes.
  3. Oversee IB examination logistics, including registration, scheduling, invigilation, coursework submission and adherence to all IB assessment deadlines and protocols.
  4. Support, mentor and guide IB subject teachers, promoting effective teaching strategies, collaborative planning and consistent implementation of the IB curriculum.
  5. Coordinate the core components of the Diploma Programme—Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
  6. Advise students and families on IB course selection, programme requirements, academic progress and university preparation.
  7. Monitor student performance and academic integrity, implementing interventions and support to ensure students meet diploma requirements.
  8. Organize and facilitate IB-related professional development, ensuring teachers maintain required IB training and certification.
  9. Maintain accurate programme records, data and documentation, and prepare reports for school leadership and the IBO.
  10. Promote the IB mission, philosophy and learner profile throughout the school community and contribute to whole-school strategic planning.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a relevant subject discipline; a Master’s degree in education, educational leadership or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Valid teaching qualification and proven, successful teaching experience within the IB Diploma Programme.
  • Thorough, up-to-date knowledge of IB standards and practices, assessment procedures and the IB philosophy and learner profile.
  • Prior IB coordination or educational leadership experience, with completion of relevant IB Coordinator training (or willingness to complete it).
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills, including the ability to manage deadlines, examinations, data and documentation accurately.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and team leadership skills, with the ability to mentor and support teaching staff.
  • Fluency in English; working proficiency in Spanish is an advantage given the bilingual, Costa Rican context.
  • Commitment to international education, intercultural understanding and the holistic development of students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, faculty and senior leadership in a multicultural community.
  • Eligibility to live and work in Costa Rica, or willingness to relocate and obtain the necessary documentation.
