Teacher of Science & Biology

ROLE SUMMARY:

The International School of Como is seeking a dedicated and passionate biology teacher to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for teaching and nurturing students in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) integrated sciences, MYP Biology, and the Diploma Programme (DP) Biology. You will play a pivotal role in fostering students' social and emotional development, creating an inclusive and encouraging classroom environment that promotes growth and curiosity about the natural world.

Through engaging lessons and innovative teaching methods, you'll inspire students to excel in scientific thinking, inquiry, and investigation, thus preparing them for their future academic endeavours.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching & Learning:

• Deliver high-quality, inclusive lessons with clear expectations.
• Foster a positive, student-centred classroom environment.
• Plan and assess ATL skills; differentiate to challenge all learners.
• Share objectives to encourage student ownership.
• Plan lessons effectively across all timeframes.
• Implement labs aligned with curriculum goals.
• Prepare cover plans in advance of absences.
• Communicate regularly with parents.
• Participate in field trips, meetings, and supervision duties.

Assessment & Reporting:

• Use formative and summative assessment tools (e.g., ManageBac).
• Maintain accurate records and write clear student reports.
• Update parents on progress in line with school policies.

Resource Management:

• Manage and monitor classroom/departmental resources.
• Maintain inventory and flag safety or maintenance needs.
• Assist with ordering and confirming new materials.

Professional Development:

• Engage in ongoing professional learning and IB training.
• Share certifications and support peer development.

Pastoral Care:

• Promote the IB Learner Profile and uphold behavioural standards.
• Ensure health, safety, and safeguarding at all times.
• Support co-curricular and House activities.
• Monitor and address student attendance and behaviour concerns.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

• A good bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in a relevant field
• An appropriate teaching qualification for the subject area, such as PGCE or equivalent
• Relevant experience of teaching Science and Biology across various educational stages
• Experience working with students for whom English is an Additional Language, showcasing adaptability and support
• Native or fluent English-speaking skills
• IB experience is preferred, but not essential. A willingness to embrace the IB philosophy is crucial
