Our Music Department plays an important role in the cultural life of the school. We are seeking an inspirational and dynamic Head of Music who will provide strong academic and artistic leadership, develop a vibrant musical culture, and inspire students to engage with music at every level.

 

ROLE SUMMARY:

 

Reddam House Constantia is seeking to appoint a passionate, innovative and highly skilled Head of Music to lead the College Music Department.

 

The successful candidate will be an outstanding music educator with the vision, energy and organisational ability to develop a diverse and ambitious programme of music across the College. They will combine excellent classroom practice with strong ensemble direction, performance leadership and departmental management.

 

The Head of Music will be responsible for ensuring that students experience music as both an academic discipline and a creative, collaborative and rewarding part of their school life.

 

The successful candidate will report to the Head of School and will work closely with colleagues across the Preparatory and College phases to promote continuity, progression and excellence throughout the school’s music programme.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Lead, manage and develop the College Music Department, ensuring high standards of teaching, learning and musical performance.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver engaging, challenging and inspiring Music lessons aligned with the relevant curriculum and IEB requirements.
  • Foster a culture of musical excellence, creativity, confidence and participation across the College.
  • Direct and develop choirs, ensembles, orchestras, bands and other co-curricular music groups as appropriate.
  • Plan and lead a varied programme of concerts, recitals, productions, assemblies, cultural events and other performances.
  • Oversee the provision and development of instrumental and individual music tuition where applicable.
  • Recruit, mentor and support music staff where required, creating a collaborative and professional departmental culture.
  • Manage departmental resources, instruments, facilities and budgets effectively.
  • Set, moderate and mark assessments and examinations, maintain accurate records, and provide meaningful reports on student progress.
  • Use music technology and ICT effectively to enhance teaching, composition, performance and learning.
  • Attend performances, rehearsals, school functions and special occasions as required.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

 

Skills and Experience:

 

  • At least 5 years IEB teaching experience.
  • Experience leading and developing a Music Department or significant music programme.
  • Strong practical musicianship and experience directing ensembles, choirs, orchestras and/or bands.
  • A passion for Musical Theatre and experience in musical direction.
  • Experience preparing students for performances, examinations and other musical events.

 

Qualifications and Accreditations

 

  • A university degree in Music, Music Education or a related field.
  • A recognised teaching qualification.
  • SACE registration or eligibility for registration.
  • The legal right to work in South Africa.
