ROLE SUMMARY:

Inspired is seeking to appoint a PYP EAL Teacher to join St John’s International School in August 2024 on a Full-Time basis. 

Founded in 1964, St. John’s International School is a private, non-profit educational institution. We are an IB continuum school committed to excellence in education through inquiry-based, child-centred teaching and learning. We are accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA).  

Circa 460 students from 50 countries pursue a challenging academic curriculum that includes an emphasis on development in athletics and the arts, all within the context of the ethos and values that make St. John’s unique. 

The highly educated, qualified and dedicated international teaching faculty makes the difference for the students at St. John’s. Among more than 15 nationalities represented, approximately quarter each hail from the UK, the US, Belgium and the rest of the world. More than 50% of the faculty hold advanced degrees.  

English is the language of instruction throughout the school. French is taught in all grades from kindergarten at foreign language and native speaker levels. Spanish, German and Dutch are offered as world languages from Grade 8 onwards. A dual language programme in English and French is offered as an option from grades Pre-K through Grade 5. Self-taught mother tongue languages are also offered in Grades 9 to 12. 

The school is situated in a pleasant residential part of French-speaking Waterloo, within easy walking distance of local shops and amenities. Waterloo and the surrounding area offer a high quality of life whether you are joining solo or with your family. The centre of Brussels is easily reached by car or tram. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide international students with English language skills of life-long value, specifically to improve their communicative ability in speaking, listening, reading and writing. 
  • Develop in students the confidence and motivation to take advantage of the academic and social opportunities offered by St John's.
  • Ensure that students are given the best opportunity to reach their potential in all curriculum areas by reducing the barrier of language, and to support students in curriculum subjects where the lack of English is impeding progress.
  • Ensure that there is regular and effective liaison between everyone involved in the teaching and care of EAL students
  • Share knowledge about students’ abilities and needs in English and to encourage teaching staff to use this knowledge effectively in planning, teaching and student grouping.
  • Engage in collaborative planning as part of a team. 
  • Incorporate student-initiated inquiry into teaching plans. 
  • Adopt adaptive teaching methods to respond to changing student needs. 
  • Maintain high standards of behavior and enforces them consistently. 
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues for professional growth.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • A university degree in primary education or English acquisition
  • A background in inquiry-based teaching in the primary years. Previous PYP experience a distinct advantage.
  • At least five years’ experience teaching primary students English as an Additional Language 
  • Demonstrated contributions to a positive school environment. 
  • ​​​​​​​A high level of educational technology skills and integration of technology into the classroom. 
  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Experience in developing and implementing daily lesson plans that cater to the educational and developmental needs of primary aged children. 
  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​A desire to engage in continuous professional development activities, such as attending workshops to stay informed about the latest teaching methods and educational research specific to primary education
  • ​​​​​​​The willingness to lead extracurriculars
