ROLE SUMMARY:

We are seeking an inspiring and experienced Director of Music to lead and grow our vibrant music programme, fostering a culture where students are encouraged to develop their musical talents, creativity, and confidence.

This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate music educator and leader to shape the strategic direction of music across the College and build on a strong tradition of excellence in performance and music education.  This is a full time, 12-month fixed term contract for the 2027 school year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the strategic development and delivery of music education across the College (Years 1-13).
  • Manage and manage music teaching staff and peripatetic tutors.
  • Lead the Year 5-7 music practical based learning programme ensuring strong progression into Years 8-13.
  • Direct and coordinate concerts, productions, assemblies, showcases, and other musical performances.
  • Lead and support ensembles including choirs, bands, orchestras, and specialist music groups.
  • Manage departmental budgets, resources, timetables, rehearsal schedules, and equipment.
  • Encourage student participation in regional and national music events, competitions, and festivals.
  • Build strong relationships with students, parents, staff, and external music organisations.
  • Monitor programme effectiveness, student participation, attendance, and reporting outcomes.
  • Promote music and extra-curricular opportunities through school events, Open Days, and community engagement activities.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • A recognised teaching qualification and current teacher registration (or Limited Authority to Teach status).
  • Proven experience teaching music and leading successful music programmes across a range of year levels.
  • Experience directing ensembles, choirs, orchestras, bands, or musical productions.
  • Strong leadership, organisational, and people management skills.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • A passion for inspiring young people through music education.
  • Experience in curriculum development, assessment, and programme improvement.
  • Knowledge of music technology and digital learning tools will be highly regarded.
  • The ability to conduct and/or play multiple instruments is advantageous.
  • Ethical, respectful, and aligned with the values of ACG Schools.


QUALIFICATIONS 

  • A recognised teaching qualification, such as a Bachelor of Education, Music or equivalent.
  • Accreditation with New Zealand Education Council or hold a Limited Authority to Teach status.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prepared to undertake a New Zealand police check prior to commencing the position
  • Provide lunch & playground cover
  • A willingness to attend school events outside regular hours as required (e.g., performances, parent-teacher interviews, etc.).
